Onstage and Backstage

About the Book
From garage rock to the avant-garde, indie pop to hardcore punk and, of course, all shades of metal, If You Like Metallica... illuminates the sounds and styles that influenced and have been influenced by this band, in addition to nonmusical elements such movies, books, and cultural iconoclasts.

Mike McPadden, as a punk in the '80s, came to Metallica middecade upon seeking a Mohawk-headed, safety-pinned lovely in a Ride the Lightning t-shirt. When he drank, he drank jagermeister, because Lars Ulrich told him to. It never helped his guitar playing.

Jimmy Failla is the host of the Off the Meter radio program.

Jonathan Groff (actor), Lauren Pritchard (actress), and Steven Sater (Spring Awakening librettist and author of A Purple Summer) talk about the first production of Spring Awakening, what the lyrics of the musical mean, and what it was like to write the book A Purple Summer:Notes on the Lyrics of Spring Awakening (Applause Books).

Onstage and Backstage

About the Book
In rich detail, Sater's notes in A Purple Summer: Notes on the Lyrics of Spring Awakening address the literary sources and allusions of each lyric of Spring Awakening. He also writes feelingly of what prompted the songs over the course of the show's eight years of development. In so doing, Sater expands on his partnership with Sheik and his experiences with original cast members, Lea Michele and Jonathan Groff, now also known from Glee. These notes will prove invaluable for fans of the show, for all those interested in theater, and most especially for all the young performers who will play the roles and sing these songs.

Steven Sater, an accomplished playwright and pop/rock lyricist, won two Tonys, a Grammy, and the 2010 Oliver Award for his work on Spring Awakening. His other collaborations with Duncan Sheik include Umbrage, Nero, The Nightingale, and Alice by Heart as well as the acclaimed album Phantom Moon. Sater has written the script and lyrics for Some Lovers, with music by Burt Bacharach, and Prometheus Bound, with music by Serj Tankian. He has also written the screenplay for the forthcoming Chitty Chitty Bang Bang remake (Sony Pictures).

Jonathan Groff is an American singer-songwriter, stage, television and film actor. He originated the role of Melchior Gabor in the stage musical Spring Awakening and appeared as Jesse St. James in the musical television series Glee.

Lauren Pritchard is an American soul singer, songwriter, and actress, currently based in London, England. Born and raised in Jackson, Tennessee, Pritchard began writing songs when she was just 14 years old.
