David Rothenberg and actors Jordan Charney and Marcia Jean Kurtz talked about David's new book Fortune in My Eyes at the Drama Book Shop in New York City on October 12, 2012. This is a recording of that live event.

Onstage and Backstage

About the Book
David Rothenberg's multilayered life thrust him into Broadway's brightest lights, prison riots, political campaigns, civil rights sit-ins, and a Central American civil war. In his memoir, Fortune in My Eyes, his journey includes many of the most celebrated names in the theater: Richard Burton, Elizabeth Taylor, Bette Davis, Sir John Gielgud, Charles Boyer, Peggy Lee, Eartha Kitt, Charles Laughton, Alvin Ailey, and numerous others. David produced an Off-Broadway prison drama, Fortune and Men's Eyes, which reshaped his life. John Herbert's chilling play led directly to the creation of the Fortune Society, which has evolved into one of the nation's most formidable advocacy and service organizations in criminal justice. David was Elizabeth Taylor's opening night date at the Richard Burton Hamlet – a distant cry from his entering Attica prison during that institution's famed inmate uprising...just two of the experiences revealed in this memoir. As a theater publicist and producer – and as a social activist – he shares experiences with presidents (JFK and Bill Clinton) and with anonymous men and women, out of prison, who have fought to reclaim their lives. The human drama of the formerly incarcerated is a match for many of the entertainment world's most fabled characters.

David Rothenberg has been involved with over 200 Broadway and Off-Broadway productions, as a publicist and producer. He is the founder of the Fortune Society, one of the nation's leading advocacy and service organizations in criminal justice. He is a former member of the NYC Human Rights Commission, and he has hosted a weekly radio program on WBAI/NYC for nearly 40 years.

Jonathan Groff (actor), Lauren Pritchard (actress), and Steven Sater (Spring Awakening librettist and author of A Purple Summer) talk about the first production of Spring Awakening, what the lyrics of the musical mean, and what it was like to write the book A Purple Summer:Notes on the Lyrics of Spring Awakening (Applause Books).

Onstage and Backstage

About the Book
In rich detail, Sater's notes in A Purple Summer: Notes on the Lyrics of Spring Awakening address the literary sources and allusions of each lyric of Spring Awakening. He also writes feelingly of what prompted the songs over the course of the show's eight years of development. In so doing, Sater expands on his partnership with Sheik and his experiences with original cast members, Lea Michele and Jonathan Groff, now also known from Glee. These notes will prove invaluable for fans of the show, for all those interested in theater, and most especially for all the young performers who will play the roles and sing these songs.

Sater has written the script and lyrics for Some Lovers, with music by Burt Bacharach, and Prometheus Bound, with music by Serj Tankian.
